Hamahigajima, also known as Hamahiga, is a picturesque island located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Connected to Okinawa’s main island by the Hamahiga Bridge, it offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and ancient legends.
History and Legends
Hamahigajima is often referred to as the “Island of the Gods” due to its deep spiritual significance in Ryukyu culture. According to local mythology, the deities Amamikiyo and Shinerikiyo, considered the ancestors of the Ryukyu* people, made this island their home. Sacred sites such as Shirumichu Cave and the Tomb of Amamikiyo attract many visitors seeking spirituality and serenity.

In 1879, Japan officially annexed the Ryukyu Kingdom and deposed its last king. This island territory then became Okinawa Prefecture (沖縄県), fully integrating the archipelago into the modern Japanese state.
Despite this political transition, the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom remains alive in Okinawa. Many legends, ancient beliefs, and mythological tales from that era continue to resonate today. Hamahigajima, known as the “Island of the Gods,” is a powerful example. Its history is deeply linked to Ryukyu mythology and to the deities worshipped in the region, making the island a sacred place for both locals and visitors.
Geography and Climate
The island measures approximately 7 kilometers in circumference and is home to around 500 residents, primarily distributed between the villages of Hama in the west and Higa in the east. Moreover, Hamahigajima enjoys a subtropical climate, characterized by mild winters and hot, humid summers typical of the Okinawa region.

- Swimming: The island’s beaches, particularly Hamahiga Beach and Muruku Beach, offer ideal swimming conditions with calm, shallow waters.
- Snorkeling: The coral reefs around the island host abundant marine biodiversity, making snorkeling especially appealing for underwater enthusiasts.
Boat fishing is also available with reservations, as well as a scuba diving center.
