Mihama American Village: A Little Slice of America in the Heart of Japan

Located on the west coast of Okinawa

Tucked along Okinawa’s western coast, in the city of Chatan, Mihama American Village is a landmark destination well worth the visit. Its story began in the late 1990s, when local authorities decided to repurpose part of a former U.S. military base to boost tourism.

Today, this lively district is located halfway between the city of Naha and the large Kadena Air Base. It serves as a meeting point between Japanese culture and the American influence that still shapes everyday life in Okinawa.

American Village: Between a Festive Atmosphere and Colorful Architecture

From the moment you arrive, you’re instantly transported. Colorful buildings, bright neon signs, palm trees, and surrounding music immediately evoke the atmosphere of American coastal cities. This vibe, often compared to places like Florida or California, blends surprisingly well with Okinawa’s tropical scenery.

At the heart of American Village once stood the iconic Ferris wheel, the Skymax 60. It was a symbol of the area and a perfect landmark for finding your way around. From the top, the panoramic view over the East China Sea was absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunset.

What happened to the Skymax 60 Ferris wheel?

The iconic Skymax 60 Ferris wheel, once a beloved symbol of American Village, is no longer in operation. It was recently dismantled, and rumors are swirling about its possible return or the construction of a brand-new attraction. Some say it’s undergoing major renovations, while others believe it will be replaced by a completely new and even more modern structure.

As of now, there’s no official announcement about its future. However, the area remains lively and full of activity, with several construction projects clearly underway. This suggests that American Village is continuing to evolve, always aiming to offer more experiences and surprises to its visitors. One thing’s for sure: this iconic site knows how to reinvent itself while keeping its unique blend of American influence and Okinawa’s tropical charm.

Exploring the “Central Depots” of American Village

For shopping enthusiasts, Depot Central (also known as “American Depot” or “Depot Island”) is a vibrant complex of buildings with eclectic architecture. It’s home to a variety of boutiques, cafés, and themed restaurants.

Located just steps away, the area also hosts events throughout the year, including craft markets and temporary exhibitions.

You’ll find local brands, fashion stores, accessory shops, and galleries showcasing the work of creators and artists. A must-visit during any trip to American Village, Depot Central is sure to spark your curiosity, whether you’re hunting for a souvenir, looking for a unique gift, or simply enjoying the lively Okinawan atmosphere.

The district is centered around shopping streets lined with trendy clothing stores, souvenir kiosks, and street food stalls. The adjacent alleyways, however, are full of staircases and hidden passages leading to small walkways where you’ll often stumble upon cozy bars or tucked-away restaurants. Some spots even feature rooftop terraces, offering stunning views of the illuminated village.

Exploring these lesser-known corners is part of the charm of American Village. You could easily spend hours wandering without noticing the time go by.

Urban Fashion Inspired by US Rap

Among the many shops in American Village, some specialize in urban fashion and American rap culture. You’ll find T-shirts featuring legendary artists like Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, and Dr. Dre, jerseys in the colors of top U.S. basketball teams, and a wide selection of athletic sneakers.

These stores, often filled with hip-hop music, also offer trendy accessories such as caps, bandanas, and urban-style jewelry. The vibe is relaxed and perfectly reflects the cosmopolitan and stylish spirit of American Village. It’s a must-visit for streetwear fans and lovers of U.S. rap culture looking for unique pieces.

Local Cuisine and Okinawan Flavors

Food is undoubtedly another highlight of this district.
For example, you’ll find everything from classic American-style barbecue to locally inspired burgers with a unique Okinawan twist.
In particular, restaurants that specialize in Okinawan cuisine often serve dishes made with Aguu pork or bitter goya vegetables.
Meanwhile, others stand out for their ultra-fresh seafood, caught just off the coast.

For those with a sweet tooth, plenty of stalls offer handmade ice cream, donuts, and American-style pastries. It’s not uncommon to spot food influencers exploring these spots in search of the next great culinary find.

A Hawaiian Lunch at Kapuka

During our visit, we had lunch at the Hawaiian restaurant Kapuka, which appears in the video around the 30-minute mark. From the moment you walk in, you’re transported to a stunning, tropical setting. Seashells, lagoon-blue tones, and reggae music create a relaxing vacation vibe.

The menu features fresh salads, avocado sliced to order, cocktails (with or without alcohol), and a wide variety of coffees and latte drinks. The staff are warm and welcoming, making sure you have everything you need. Three glass dispensers are available for self-serve flavored water, including blackcurrant, grapefruit, and a seasonal option.

Nighttime Atmosphere and “Christmas Land”

When night falls, the atmosphere shifts completely. Live concerts fill the streets with music, and bars and clubs open their doors to night owls. From mid-November to mid-March, the village is lit up with stunning Christmas lights, creating a magical display that draws visitors looking for a touch of nighttime wonder.

The holiday spirit lasts 365 days a year thanks to Christmas Land, a spacious two-story shop entirely dedicated to Christmas decorations.
Just a note: only the ground floor remains open all year round. The second floor, on the other hand, opens only from October to December. During that time, the entire store becomes a true magical paradise.
This place is reminiscent of the American Christmas shops you see in movies. Sparkling garlands, delicate ornaments, a wide variety of figurines—the selection is impressive!

A Fun-Filled Day for Every Interest

You can easily spend a whole day exploring American Village. Whether you’re visiting alone, as a couple, or with friends, there’s plenty to do. Start your morning browsing the shops and sampling local specialties. Then head to one of the scenic rooftop terraces for a relaxing lunch.

In the afternoon, relax in one of the cozy cafés and soak in the ocean breeze before getting ready for an evening out at one of the many restaurants or bars in the area.

For those who want to extend the experience, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including bowling, karaoke, arcades, and even dinner shows. There’s truly something for everyone.

A Winter Fireworks Show

Every Saturday at 8 p.m., from mid-November to mid-March, a fireworks show lights up the night sky. This dazzling display adds a magical touch to the lively evenings in American Village. It delights both tourists and locals, making each weekend night even more special.

Whether you’re looking for a festive vibe, a romantic night out, or a fun family outing, these fireworks are the perfect way to make your visit even more memorable.

American village: Parking Tips

It can sometimes be tricky to find parking directly inside American Village, especially on weekends or during peak tourist season. A convenient alternative is the large parking lot at the AEON shopping center, located just across the street. Parking there is free, but to help keep it that way, it’s a good idea to make a small purchase inside the mall.

This could be a souvenir, a piece of clothing, some groceries for dinner, or even just a bottle of water. In Japan, it’s customary to show appreciation when public amenities are offered free of charge. So making a small purchase is not only a polite gesture, but also a way to thank and support the local businesses that make this service possible.

Access by Public Transportation

Most people in Okinawa still get around by car.
However, you can easily reach American Village by bus from Naha City or other popular tourist areas on the island.

Several bus lines serve Chatan City, and the bus stop is just a few minutes’ walk from American Village. The ride can take between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on traffic.

Once you arrive, take a walk through the neighborhood. It’s a pleasant way to soak in the atmosphere while discovering the many shops and restaurants that make this place so charming.

Hotels, Luxury, and Beachside Convenience

Several upscale hotels have been built around the district to welcome visitors looking for comfort and relaxation. Some hotels offer infinity pools with stunning beach views. Others feature spas or indoor pools, perfect spots to relax after a full day of exploring.

One of the major highlights of the area is also its direct access to a beach named Sunset Beach, famous for its atmosphere and stunning sunsets. After a day spent discovering American Village, you can easily slip away to this beautiful sandy beach and enjoy Okinawa’s warm, sunny weather.

American Village: An Unforgettable Experience

Mihama American Village blends American culture with Okinawan tradition. The result is a festive, welcoming atmosphere that appeals to all ages.
Come for the food, the shopping, the live music or simply for a romantic walk by the sea.
Whatever brings you here, this lively district is sure to surprise and delight.
